August 2024 Serious Play (Toronto, ON, Canada) - Title: Let's Play - Better Teaching with Board Games Presenters: Peter Jamieson - Miami University and Eric Rapos - Ontario Tech University. Abstract: The "Let's Play" initiative started in 2022 and has resulted in us having a deeper understanding of how board games can be used as role-reversal shortened experiences that help teachers learn and experience different ideas as it relates to better teaching. We have implemented workshops on these ideas at various levels, and we continue to push the ideas on how board games provide a great medium to learn how to improve our teaching skills. Our goal is to expose educators and leaders to the benefit of using board games to experientially observe and improve our teaching. For this workshop (link), we provide approximately 16 participants (the maximum optimal number being 32) the opportunity to play and experience how improving teaching and games intersect. Our workshop provides attendees the opportunity to play 3 games in an evolving manner that focuses on the following teaching ideas: technical vocabulary, scaffolding, and the culture of the classroom.

May 2023 Miami CEC Alumni Conference (Oxford, OH) - Title: How Board Games Can Help you and Miami Be Better at Teaching and Learning Presenters: Eric Rapos - Miami University, Peter Jamieson - Miami University Abstract: The reality is we all spend significant time in our careers teaching others about our ideas, skills, and understanding of various complex systems. In this talk, we will motivate the benefits of board games in education, but instead of discussing how to apply games in the classroom, we will demonstrate how playing and teaching games can help you become a better teacher and learner. In particular, we will focus on providing two experiential gaming activities that illustrate how games can be used to internalize and improve your understanding of both teaching and learning. This will be beneficial to students, professors, and professionals, and not to worry, it might be fun too!
